Lufkin Police Increase Timberland Patrols
The Lufkin Police Department has increased patrols on Timberland Drive. The road runs where many children will be crossing to get to Lufkin Middle School on August 6th.
I saw an LPD traffic enforcement officer stop someone next to the radio station earlier this week. Likely part of the step up in officers that has seen TxDOT paying overtime for extra help.
I haven't noticed anyone speeding within the Lufkin city limits. I do notice people going 10 to almost 20 miles an hour under the speed limit.
Timberland Drive Is Not A City Of Lufkin Road
Timberland Drive is maintained by TxDOT, not the city of Lufkin. A STEP (selective traffic enforcement program) grant from them could be the reason officers are out in force.
That initiative is focused on preventing D.W.I., distracted driving, and speeding. According to KTRE, it is only an attempt to keep students safe and to remind drivers of traffic laws before the first day of school.
There is no mention ot TxDOT in the information provided by the city, so that could be purely speculation on my part, but that is what I have seen in other cities around Texas.
Traffic Enforcement Officer Eduardo Ibarra says it's not about writing a bunch of tickets. This is about traffic awareness.
Teaching Lufkin Drivers How To Drive Before School Starts
I hope this enforcement gives unattentive drivers the wakeup call they need before children hit the streets of Timberland Drive in less than a week.
