FM 58 Construction: Lufkin Road Delays & Progress Update

If you have driven on FM 58/Chestnut Street outside the Loop in Lufkin, you know that construction work has been going on for a long time in the area. First it started with trees being trimmed back.

Then they began putting in new culverts for residents with driveways that terminated at the roadway. Once the ditches started being widened, they started closing the road to get ready for cement.

A local firm is doing the work on this road. Pinto Construction in Nacogdoches has been tasked with upgrading the farm road. The first parts could have asphalt by as early as Friday, March 28th, according to workers on site.

Other workers on site have said it could be July. This road could be dirt for a long time.

Be Prepared For Delays On FM 58 In Lufkin

Most of FM 58 past the Whitehouse exit is now a dirt and rock road. I travel this road daily, and between 7 AM and 5 PM, it is down to one lane with a pilot car.

I have waited 10 minutes at the longest for a pilot car to get on the road. According to TxDot public information officer Rhonda Oaks, this week they are pulverizing, mixing base materials, cement treatments, and priming the roadway.

FM 58 goes all the way to Diboll, so this will be a long project. Weather permitting, the road will be complete in 2026.

Take An Alternate Route To Stay Off FM 58 If Possible

If I didn't have to take this road to get out of my driveway, I would find an alternate route. Getting up on the road during the construction has been challenging unless you drive a lifted truck.

Many garbage trucks and trucks with trailers go down this road because the Angelina County landfill is on FM 58. They are all hauling heavy loads to the dump.

When the construction is done, I hope the new road will stand up to this level of heavy traffic better. Things are progressing quickly, and I am happy with the progress so far.
